Learning outcomes of the curricular unit (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students)

Acquisition of knowledge and skills relating to animal production systems with a view to understanding their multifunctionality, their effect on production quality and the environment and their links with the various food chains. Integration and development of practical knowledge and skills necessary for the management and technical management of major livestock production.

Syllabus

Theoretical: 1. Livestock production in the context of agricultural production: sector diagnosis. 2. Meat and dairy cattle, sheep and goat farming: 2.1. Market and products. 2.2. Lifecycles. 2.3. Production chains. 2.4. Production systems: general structure; reproduction, feeding, hygiene and health, milking, breeding. 3. Pigs, poultry and rabbits: 3.1. Production chains: general structure, models and production systems. 3.2. Integration and markets. 3.3. Life and production cycles of pigs (breeding, rearing and fattening), poultry (breeding, incubation and hatching, layers, broilers) and rabbits (breeding, rearing and fattening).
Theoretical and Practical: Demonstration / execution of animal husbandry tasks of major livestock production.
Mentoring Orientation: Coordination and support of the activities involved in operating the farm.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

Integrative approach to the functioning of major animal production systems, with the quality of various products are obtained and their environmental impact.
The focus is on the farm as a whole, to give an understanding of its structure and functioning, and on management activities, to enable for their execution.

Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)

Actual sessions: Theoretical sessions, practical and theoretical and study visits with the presentation of different animal production systems and their functioning. Independent work: bibliographical research for preparation of the report dealt with thematic description of the production system, critical analysis and presentation of alternatives.

Assessment methods and criteria
- Assessment: written tests (WT) - 2;
- Admission to exam: Registration in curricular unit.
- Exemption from exam: (WT1+WT2)/2 >=10; WT1 e WT2 >=8
- Final exam: written test - 1

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

In the theoretical sessions presents the fundamental concepts of traditional exploitation of the main livestock species. The theoretical-practical sessions and study visits are aimed at developing skills for the comprehension of procedures related to the farm, in real situations in the business. Independent work will allow the consolidation of knowledge of subjects taught.
