Learning outcomes of the curricular unit (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students)

Knowledge and ability to understand the concepts related to the research process, recognizing and differentiating the different paradigms in research, identifying the phases of the research process

Ability to relate the different research paradigms to nursing knowledge, researching adequately in different sources of information and recognizing the ethical issues of human research

Ability to apply the theoretical bases and fundamental applications of descriptive statistics, communicating the statistical decisions and conclusions of the results of the calculations

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

Licensed nurse will be a critical user of the results of the investigation, so syllabus should include the acquisition of knowledge and skills that allow student to understand the basic concepts in research, the acquisition of nursing knowledge through scientific research, and the fundamental paradigms in research. The approach of the various stages of the research process, the methodological principles of the studies carried out on relevant clinical issues, and the resources that promote the development of the research process allow the student to understand the acquisition of scientific knowledge in nursing. The program contents of this UC focus on research concepts, methods, and data treatment in quantitative analysis of empirical data

Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)

Exhibition classes, reading and guided analysis of reference texts and research articles, aiming at the identification of the phases and stages of the investigation process. Conducting statistical exercises. The autonomous component of the curricular unit should be carried out by the students through: analysis of scientific bibliography on the themes addressed and others considered complementary to the development of inherent competencies.
1 individual written test, with 100% weighting in UC.

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

The lectures, the readings of reference texts and the discussion centred on the programmatic contents lead to the attainment of the cognitive objectives. Objectives more focused on critical appreciation skills require reading and discussion of scientific articles. The objectives that are achieved in acquiring operational skills require the use of strategies such as problem solving and exercises.

Descriptive statistics approach is theoretical, the conceptual bases, formulas and operational processes. As far as the correction of the calculations is concerned, the definition of problems and the interpretation of results are relevant.

The evaluation methodology intends to reflect the learning carried out within the framework of the development of the curricular unit and focus the objectives and competences defined. The written exam covers theoretical and conceptual aspects, as well as practical exercises
