Learning outcomes of the curricular unit (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students)

Apply the knowledge and skills acquired to propose the best available techniques to the production processes. Execute environmental management actions for the responsible use of natural resources in order to ensure the environmental sustainability of processes and the minimization of the impacts of agro-industries. Integrate and adequate the best techniques with the intention to achieve the environmental licensing.

Syllabus

1. Environmental aspects and impacts resulting from activities of the agro-industrial sector.
2. Implementation of an environmental management system and its certification (ISO 14000 and EMAS III).
3.Environmental licensing and the application of Best Available Techniques.
4. Wastewater treatment systems adapted to agro-food systems.
5. Case studies in the context of the agro-industrial sector.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit's learning objectives

The unit aims to acquire knowledge and develop skills that enable students to implement environmental management measures as a means of ensuring environmental sustainability of productive processes and minimizing environmental impacts. Through the teaching of the syllabus is intended that students attain a body of knowledge and abilities about:
- The environmental licensing and legal framework in the environmental area of agro-industrial companies, including some of those listed in the ''Regime do Exercício de Actividades Industriais (REAI)'', and covered by legislation Prevention and Integrated Control of Pollution (PICP).
- The identification and monitoring of environmental aspects and impacts resulting from activities of the agro-industrial sector, and the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT).
- The implementation of an environmental management system and its environmental certification (ISO 14000 and EMAS III).
- The wastewater treatment systems adapted to agro-food systems.

Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)

The theoretical-practical sessions include expository lessons and practical classes. The learning is complemented with presential practical classes where procedures and analytical techniques are introduced for the characterization of water and wastewater from agroindustries. In the tutorial sessions the project-based learning process is developed. In the distance learning sessions, the Moodle platform is used; the synchronous sessions will be carried out by videoconferences, supported by the MIRO platform, which allows full interaction between the members of the working group.
Students are admitted to a final exam.
Continuous assessment consists of a group project (Test A) and an individual written test (Test B) with, respectively, 50% and 50% weighting. For exemption, none of the assessment elements can have a classification < 8 points and the final classification will be a minimum of 10 (ten) points for all the assessment elements indicated.
The final exam consists of a written test.

Demonstration of the coherence between the teaching methodologies and the learning outcomes

Not only through the lectures and the resulting discussion of issues raised during classroom and tutorial teaching but also viewing the practical work/project to be conducted in an agro-food enterprise, students will develop of the items programmatic reported earlier, namely on:
- The legal framework in the environmental area of the agro-industrial enterprise, particularly if it is included in ''Regime Exercício de Actividades Industriais (REAI)'' and if it is covered by the legislation of Prevention and Integrated Control of Pollution (PICP).
- The identification and monitoring of key environmental aspects and impacts resulting from the activity of the agro-industrial enterprise and the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT) to this activity.
- The sizing of wastewater treatment systems adapted to this agro-food system.
- And the implementation of an environmental management system and its certification (ISO 14000 and EMAS III).
The implementation of the project will ensure the environmental sustainability of processes and secondly, will contribute to students' motivation, stimulated by direct contact with business and in-situ identification of environmental problems associated with economic activity.
